P0171 and P0174 Lean Codes: An Evidence-First Test Plan

P0171 and P0174 mean the control module is adding more fuel than expected. When both banks are lean, look for a shared cause before replacing oxygen sensors.

1. Preserve the conditions

Record freeze-frame data before clearing codes: RPM, load, coolant temperature, vehicle speed, short- and long-term fuel trims, and closed-loop status. An idle-only fault suggests a different path from a fault that grows under load.

2. Compare fuel trims at idle and 2,500 rpm

Warm the engine fully and compare both banks. If positive trim is strongest at idle and improves at 2,500 rpm, inspect for unmetered air at the intake boot, PCV plumbing, booster hose, manifold seals, and purge circuit. If trim remains high or worsens under load, test fuel pressure and delivery and evaluate the mass-airflow signal.

3. Prove the electrical baseline

Check cranking and charging voltage, then perform loaded voltage-drop tests on engine and sensor grounds. Weak voltage or resistance can distort several signals at once, so judge related scan parameters together.

4. Test the suspected system

Smoke-test the intake, verify that the purge valve seals when commanded closed, compare fuel pressure with service information, and inspect the MAF element and ducting. Graph both banks together: a shared change supports a shared upstream cause.

5. Verify the repair

Clear adaptations only after correcting the cause. Repeat the idle and 2,500-rpm observations, then road-test under conditions close to the original freeze frame. Confirm stable trims and monitor completion.
